DJ Mustard is bringing real snap back.
While snap music had its heyday in the the south in the late ’90s, you can hear it all over a Mustard beat, and it’s being infused all over the charts this year. The producer has had an amazing 2014 and it’s only just getting started. The marquee moment is YG‘s new album My Krazy Life which he all but co-wrote, but he’s got numerous other tracks landing on the chart this year — Kid Ink’s “Show Me,” Ty Dolla $ign’s “Paranoid,” and Trey Songz’s “Nana” to name a few. He’s the producer de jour.
And this is just the beginning for the Compton-raised producer who got his start DJ’ing up and down the West Coast playing jwek and hyfy records at parties.
“I was never was like ‘I wanna just do a pop record,'” says Mustard, “I was more focused on killing the hip-hop game, and then doing that. The “Show Me” record is start to cross over into the pop world and that’s cool.”
But he’s about to break through to the pop world, as Mustard has two high-profile collaberations in the works with Rihanna and Justin Bieber. While he knows Rihanna from the LA scene, his connection with Bieber is a little more clandestine. Working on a Bieber track is all phone calls and and emails. He didn’t even really know about it until Bieber posted the Instagram with his “Mustard on the beat” tag on it.
